How to Create a WhatsApp Click-to-Chat Link (wa.me) — Complete Guide

A WhatsApp click-to-chat link lets anyone start a conversation with you with one tap — no need to save your number first. It is the single most useful link a small business can put on its website, Instagram bio, or Facebook page. Here is exactly how to make one, the mistakes that break it, and how to add a pre-filled message.

What is a wa.me link?

WhatsApp's official click-to-chat feature works through short URLs on the wa.me domain. When someone opens your link, WhatsApp (app or web) launches with a chat window to your number already open. The basic format is:

https://wa.me/<your-number>

The number must be in full international format — country code plus subscriber number, digits only.

Step 1: Write your number in international format

Take your normal phone number and convert it:

  1. Drop the leading zero. A Pakistani mobile like 0300 1234567 becomes 3001234567.
  2. Add your country code in front. Pakistan is 92, so the number becomes 923001234567.
  3. Remove everything else — no plus sign, no spaces, no dashes, no brackets.

Quick check: your final number should contain digits only and start with the country code. 923001234567 ✓   +92 300 1234567 ✗

Step 2: Build the link

Put the number after https://wa.me/:

https://wa.me/923001234567

Open it in your browser to test — your own WhatsApp chat should open. That is your basic click-to-chat link, ready to share anywhere.

Step 3: Add a pre-filled message (recommended)

A plain link opens an empty chat. A link with a pre-filled message opens WhatsApp with your text already typed — the visitor just presses send. This is what turns a link into a lead machine.

Add ?text= followed by your message, with spaces replaced by %20:

https://wa.me/923001234567?text=Hello%2C%20I%20want%20to%20place%20an%20order

Manual URL-encoding is fiddly — one wrong character and the message breaks. Common replacements:

CharacterWrite as
space%20
,%2C
?%3F
new line%0A

Common mistakes that break wa.me links

These three mistakes cause 90% of broken links:

  1. Keeping the plus sign: https://wa.me/+923001234567 does not work. Digits only.
  2. Forgetting the country code: https://wa.me/03001234567 fails — WhatsApp cannot tell which country the number belongs to.
  3. Leaving the leading zero: https://wa.me/9203001234567 is wrong. After adding 92, drop the 0.

Where to use your click-to-chat link

  • Website: add a floating WhatsApp chat button visible on every page, plus the link on your contact page and in the footer.
  • Instagram bio: paste it as your website link — it is the only clickable link in your bio.
  • Facebook page: add it to your page's action button and about section.
  • Business cards & flyers: turn the link into a QR code and print it.
  • Email signature: one line — "Chat on WhatsApp" — with the link behind it.

Going further: templates and order forms

Once the basic link works, the next level is ready-made message templates (greeting, order inquiry, appointment booking — in English and Urdu) and a mini order form that formats the customer's name, items and address into one WhatsApp message. That is exactly what my free tool builds for you in seconds.
